Stopping Spam Emails

February 24, 2010 – 3:14 pm

Many individuals receive spam emails without thinking too much about them. But we should take spam seriously and help everyone make online a safer place to be.  This article looks at ways in which people can try to outwit or report spammers thereby reducing their success.

Receiving junk mails may not see a big issue if they re about trivial things or making ridiculous product claims. And don’t we all have better things to do that worry about junk mail?  Well, in some ways this may be true, but for people to understand the problem with spam emails, they have to understand some facts behind spam.

To begin with, spam emails cost everyone money. People who receive spam email in their  new email account at work lose time due to dealing with junk emails. This costs the business they work for money.

Also, many people are upset by spam.A lot of people have lost money to spammers who pretent to be banks and building societies.Stories of illness or the need to transfer funds inot a UK bank account catch some people out. It’s easy with hindsight to say they were easy prey, but at the time these spam scams were less well known.

Therefore spam may not be so innocent or harmless as some think.  It can literally clog peoples inboxes and cause distress, so it should be stopped. But it’s hard to keep your address out of spammers’ hands, although new software to filter oiut spam emails is coming out all the time.

One thing you can do to stop spam by yourself, is to use a different  email account when you are on a social networking site, such as Facebook. Never use @ but say instead at or AT – so you would be jane.smithAT (the name of the service provider) and not jane.smith@ followed by your service provider.

As many email addresses are targeted with guesswork, using and underscore or number greatly reduces the chances of your address being discovered. And therefore jane_smith79_2@ service provider will be less likely to be guessed correctly by software.

The Information Commissioner’s Office or even google and yahoo will recieve reports about spam should you choose to make one, but although they work hard to reduce or eliminate spam it’s an uphill struggle.
