Web Design Tips – Designing Search Engine Friendly Websites
October 7, 2009 – 12:37 pmWhat Comes First – The Web Design Or The SEO? This question is sure to raise some lively discussion but depending on who you ask will determine the actual answer you receive.
A graphic designer based website development company will argue in many of cases that the web site design can be the only contender of course. And let’s face it without that visually appealing to the eye design a browser will navigate away from your site within a matter of seconds or so they have you think. But then that raises the big question of how did they find your site in the first instance?
The basic web design criteria or curve goes along the lines of initial design is presented ..website design looks visually appealing and is given the go ahead. We need some content ok, we’ll rustle something up…..website is uploaded and time passes but only minimal traffic!
And then more time until eventually perhaps many months later the situation is either so bad or the company are spending a fortune on adwords that finally the SEO expert gets called in or the sales manager starts to question the lack of inbound enquiries from the web, and before you know it you are having to spend more than should be necessary on search engine promotion to try and rescue some website rankings.
Is this the best way to launch a website? The thousands of website owners that have travelled this route will certainly argue that it most definitely is not as this hope for the best web development criteria delays any websites success by unacceptable periods of time, and even more frightening results in lost profit, lost time and lost potential customers.
I don’t think that any web expert would argue against the fact that the search engines don’t rank on the visual aspect of web design but with scant regard to optimisation so often this important first exposure when the website first gets indexed is lost, if all the search engines find is a badly optimised site with a miniscule focus or regard paid to any SEM requirements or keyword capture.
A little extra attention and money spent on pre development SEO ,for example keyword research and optimisation gives an excellent return on investment as invariably initial indexing is bound to achieve a far better search engine ranking from day one and even in some cases a page one result straight away.
